UPDATED: Pedestrian Passes Away After Collision at Robert Street and Wentworth Avenue Late Friday Morning

WEST ST PAUL, MINNESOTA — A serious crash occurred late Friday morning involving a pedestrian and a pickup truck around 9:55 AM at the intersection of South Robert Street and Wentworth Avenue in West St Paul, Minnesota. The incident brought local emergency services from the West St. Paul Police, South Metro Fire Department, and M Health Paramedics. The Minnesota State Patrol was also on scene to help with the investigation.

Upon arrival, first responders found a 36-year-old female pedestrian from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, who had been struck by a GMC pickup truck. The pedestrian was in very critical condition and was immediately transported to Regions Hospital by M Health Paramedics for urgent medical care. The driver of the pickup truck, a 23-year-old male from Forest Lake, Minnesota, was unharmed and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. Preliminary reports confirm that alcohol and drugs were not factors in this incident.

Due to the severity of the collision, the intersection of Robert Street and Wentworth Avenue was closed yesterday to allow investigators to examine the scene thoroughly. The timeline of those events can be found below.

Traffic Updates:

  • Initial Closure: Following the incident, the intersection was initially closed, and the public was advised to expect delays on Robert Street and plan their travel accordingly.

  • 11:40 am Update: Authorities announced that the intersection was expected to remain closed until at least 12:30 pm as investigators continued their work.

  • 12:21 pm Final Update: The intersection was reopened, and normal traffic flow resumed. The West St. Paul Police Department thanked the public for their patience during the closure.

The Minnesota State Patrol assisted local authorities with the investigation. The West St. Paul Police Department expressed its gratitude to the Minnesota State Patrol for their help in investigating this incident. The investigation remains active at this time.

Update - May 23, 2024

According to the Pioneer Press, the 36-year-old woman who was struck by a pickup truck late Friday evening in West St Paul, Minnesota, passed away from her injuries. The victim was identified as Leticia Maria Vasquez of Brooklyn Park. It was reported that she had passed away on Sunday and had suffered from head trauma, including other injuries. Authorities say that drugs, alcohol, speed, reckless driving, or distractions from a cell phone were not contributing factors to this accident. The 23-year-old driver of the truck continues to cooperate with the investigation. No charges have been issued yet as law enforcement continues to investigate the cause.
